Dougga and Bulla Regia Tour: Two Roman Cities in One Day
This Dougga and Bulla Regia tour takes you inland to the two Roman sites that best reward the drive. Dougga is the most complete Roman city in North Africa, and Bulla Regia is the only one where the rich built their villas underground. A private driver picks you up at your hotel in Hammamet, Sousse or Tunis, and you pay per car, not per person.

How the Dougga and Bulla Regia Tour Runs
The Dougga and Bulla Regia tour is our longest day: about 2 h 30 of driving each way from Hammamet, and 2 hours from Tunis. That is why we suggest a 07:30 start. Stop 1: Dougga, the Best-Kept Roman City in North Africa
Dougga is not a few columns in a field. It is a whole town you can read on the ground: you follow the streets, step into houses and sit in the theatre. The Capitol still has its columns and pediment, and no modern town was ever built on top. Allow 2 h 30 to 3 hours, with some climbing on uneven paving.

- The Libyco-Punic Mausoleum, older than the Roman town
Stop 2: Bulla Regia and Its Underground Villas
To escape summers above 40 °C, the people of Bulla Regia built a whole floor below ground. Those rooms still have their mosaics on the floor, where they were laid rather than behind museum glass. You go down the original stairs and walk beside them. No other Roman city is known to have been built this way.

Tips for Visiting Dougga and Bulla Regia
A long drive and two open-air sites call for a little planning. Here is what matters most.
Wear closed shoes
Roman paving at Dougga is uneven and the stairs at Bulla Regia are narrow. Leave sandals at the hotel.
Bring plenty of water
Dougga covers 65 hectares in full sun. Plan on 1.5 litres per person in summer.
Start at 07:30
You get the site at its quietest and you are home before dark.
Go in spring
The north-west is the greenest part of Tunisia, and in March and April the hills are covered in flowers.

Dougga and Bulla Regia: Common Questions
Timing, prices and what makes these two sites different.
How long is the Dougga and Bulla Regia tour?
About 9 h 45 from Hammamet, plus lunch. That is 2 h 30 of driving each way, 2 h 30 at Dougga, 40 minutes between the sites and 1 h 30 at Bulla Regia. We suggest a 07:30 start.
How much does a Dougga and Bulla Regia tour cost?
€120 per car for 1 to 4 people from Hammamet, €140 from Tunis and €150 from Sousse. The price covers the car, fuel, tolls and the driver. Tickets cost about 12 dinars per person per site.
Is it shorter from Tunis?
Yes. Dougga is about 2 hours from Tunis, against 2 h 30 from Hammamet. That makes it one of the most popular day trips from the capital.
Why is Dougga so well preserved?
No modern town was ever built on top of it, and it sits far from the coast. Unlike Carthage, the Roman street plan has survived almost whole, from the forum to the houses.
Can we stop in Testour on the way?
Yes, at no extra cost, if you leave about 30 minutes earlier. The Andalusian town and its octagonal minaret are right on the route. Tell us when you book.
Is there shade on the sites?
Very little. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and at least 1.5 litres of water each in summer. There is water at the Dougga entrance but none inside the site.
